Young photographers are being invited to capture images of Plymouth’s foreshore for future generations as part of a competition launched by the Plymouth and West Devon Record Office in partnership with Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery.

The ‘Plymouth Pictured’ photography competition is open to anyone aged 25 and under and the top three entries will each win a digital camera.

“We’re looking for anyone who enjoys photography and feels inspired by the foreshore to submit their images,” said Tony Davey, Community Engagement Officer at the record office. “If any young person out there feels they can capture good images that reflect how they feel about our unique coastline, what they do on it and what it means to them we urge them to get snapping!”

To enter the competition all people need to do is upload their images to the Plymouth Pictured ‘Flickr’ page before Sunday 25 June.

The competition is part of a much bigger ‘Plymouth Pictured’ project that the record office and the Museum are working on. Funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, it involves the conservation, cataloguing and digitisation of the city’s collection of over 80,000 photographs, which date back as far as the 1890s.

The project also involves developing a series of learning and community-based resources that will enable local communities to access a unique record of their changing city. The photography competition is part of this community response. All of the best entries will be submitted to the record office’s archive collection, helping to create a legacy for others to enjoy in years to come.

The record office will be running some free photography workshops for young people during May in connection with the project. For details call 01752 305940 or email tony.davey@plymouth.gov.uk.
