Writers from Swindon, Cardiff, London, Taunton as well as local Bristol heads represented with blazing artwork covering the entire tunnel surface on both sides from end to end… with rootikal tunes on hand from Come Unity Sound to bless up the proceedings with their 12volt lushness fans drawn by news of the occasion as well as locals and amused passers by were treated to a proper spray can carnival vibe and the opportunity to see some real street art talent in full flow.

Bristol street art gallery King of Paint is hosting an exclusive solo show in the lead up to Christmas showcasing one off and limited edition pieces from renowned artist RYCA. Doors to the gallery in Haymarket Walk open to the public on 9th December at 7pm.

Bristol’s coolest gallery, King of Paint, undergoes a makeover for each exhibition and RYCA is pulling out the stops for the private viewing on the 8th December, filling the newly painted silver space with a host of Storm Troopers. The exhibition theme is based around RYCA’s influences from the global movie world and features limited edition prints of his iconic Star Wars characters, including the famous ‘Reservoir Troopers’ in addition to one off originals.

RYCA, real name Ryan Callanan, originates from London and has become well known for his urban art as well as designing and manufacturing signs and more recently for his experimenting with CNC engineering to create a completely different aesthetic to his work. Talking about the exhibition RYCA said: “I’m obsessive about art, music, film, culture, history and toys. Think of this show as a visual representation of what’s going on in my head most of the time.” Paul Villalba, King of Paint gallery owner added: “The man is constantly pushing mediums with his edgy pop culture visions. This is a show not to be missed. RYCA’s work ranges from £80 to £1000, making this a very affordable exhibition and perfect for those wishing to buy a unique and one off Christmas present.”

The gallery is normally open Monday – Saturday, 10am – 6pm, and those wishing to peruse at their own leisure can book private viewings by emailing i...@KOPaint.com.

The Art of Ply, an exhibition at The Showroom in College Green, is a rare gem, don’t miss the opportunity to witness some truly original furniture design combined with the artwork of Bristol’s finest street artists. The words of William Morris encapsulate the essence of The Art of Ply; ‘Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful’. The exhibition is a concept furniture design show, featuring functional art made from plywood. Josh Rose has generated a timeless design by routering out the pieces of a chair onto a single sheet of ply. The cut-out chairs conjure up an image of old Airfix models, where the pieces can be ‘popped’ out and constructed into a fully functional chair. Josh is part of the Limited Press collective, whose murals can be seen in and around Stokes Croft, and his Art of Ply exhibition has excellently brought together the best of Bristol’s street artists including Mr Jago, RichT, Ponk, Epok, 45RPM and the Limited Press. The exhibition, which started on June 24, runs until July 2.

The idea behind the project was to customize a selection of specially canvas wrapped Red Bull fridges which, now completed, are exhibited and functional in a selection of bars around Bristol. The calibre of artists taking part in Canvas Cooler was second to none, with Bristol’s best artists creating their pieces in the rapidly developing art workshop, ‘ The Motorcycle Showroom’ on Stoke’s Croft.

The coolers have been decorated by Bristol artists:
Inkie, Cheba, Epok, Sepr, Cheo, Lokey, SPZero76 and Loch Ness.

To see the designs for yourself, have a look behind the bar at any of these venues:
The Bank (Inkie)
Big Chill (Cheba)
The Woods (Cheo)
Basement 45(Lokey)
Start The Bus (SPZero76)
Joe Publics (Sepr)
Elbow Room (Loch Ness)
Hermanos (Epok)

Nick Walker has shown his support for Bristol’s children by donating artwork for the Mad Hatter’s Ball and Art Auction, run by Art Action for Kids. Nick Walker is one of the world’s best known street artists. He emerged from the infamous and ground-breaking Bristol graffiti scene of the early 1980s. Nick draws on the energy and imagery of graffiti but he succeeds in combining the freedom the spray can brings with very controlled and intricate stenciling. The results are highly sophisticated and infinitely desirable. The methods he uses retain their forcefulness and integrity on the traditional medium of canvas. Nick Walker’s instantly recognisable style and humour have gained him a worldwide following. In 2008 Nick had sellout shows in LA and London, where collectors queued for over 24 hours to be among the first to get his latest print edition. In 2008, his iconic Moona Lisa sold over ten times its estimated value at auction at Bonhams. Now Bristolians will be able to bid for an iconic Vandal print at the Mad Hatter’s Ball. The Ball will be held on Saturday 26 March 2011 at the Bristol Museum and Art Gallery. Tickets are now on sale via the Colston Hall. For more information, please visit www.colstonhall.org/boxoffice The exclusive art auction will also feature extraordinary artworks generously donated by some of contemporary art’s biggest names including Ben Eine, whose work was amongst the official gifts given to Barack Obama by David Cameron on his first trip to Washington as Prime Minister, and Shepard Fairey, who created the iconic “Hope” poster for Barack Obama’s presidential campaign. Other renowned artists include Conor Harrington, D*Face, David Stoupakis, Carol Piece and Chloe Early. The donated piece will be on display at the Bristol Museum and Art Gallery prior to the Ball. All proceeds from the event will go towards practical art programmes for children at M Shed, the innovative new museum for Bristol opening in Spring 2011.

The documentary, a Paranoid Pictures Production, is the story of how a French documentary film maker tried to befriend the extremely elusive Banksy. It is named after an exhibit from Banksy’s uber successful 2009 exhibition at Bristol museum which attracted hundreds of thousands of visitors from around the world and saw seven hour long queues outside Bristol Museum. This entertaining Banksy film was named alongside four others in the Best Documentary Feature category. The other nominees are Gasland, Inside Job, Restrepo and Waste Land. It comes after Exit Through The Gift Shop received a Bafta film nomination. The Baftas are often seen as a precursor to the Oscars, which take place in LA on February 27.
