TALL FIRS RELEASE THURSTON MOORE COVER AS PART OF ATP FESTIVAL PROJECT

Tall Firs have released a cover of Thurston Moore’s Fri/End as part of a pre-ATP Festival project ahead of their appearance at next month’s festival in Minehead, Butlins, with Moore (of Sonic Youth fame). The band will release a free downloadable cover version of a track by another artist on the festival line-up, with the fifth and final track coming out the day before the event.

Tall Firs are Dave Mies and Aaron Mullan. They have been pals since junior high school. Starting in 1990, they literally taught each other how to play guitar, wood-shedding shoulder to shoulder. Today they continue to refine a creole guitar language that is pretty much a two-man weave between those same disparate destinations. Over the past 10 years the Firs have shared stages with Thurston Moore, Silver Apples, Jeff Mangum, Shellac, Awesome Color, Emily Haines, Sonic Youth, Stephen Malkmus and The Jicks, Magic Markers, Kurt Vile, Celebration and a host of others.

The group will join the likes of The Magnetic Fields, Joanna Newsom, Low, Sebadoh, Boredoms, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion and more, to play at Jeff Mangum’s ATP Festival, which takes place from March 9-11. Tickets are still available, from £175, at HERE.

Since catching them in the Tipi tent at End of the Road Festival back in 2009, we’ve been waiting for Wye Oak to come over from the States and play a gig over here and now they are. The group has secured a support slot with Cold War Kids this February on their Manchester (Feb 20) Glasgow (21) and London dates (22 and 23). So we thought we best share the love and let you hear some of the awesomeness that is Wye Oak. Wye Oak wrote what became Civilian between December of 2009 and July of 2010. The songs “are, as a whole, about aloneness (the positive kind), loneliness (the horrible kind), moving on, and letting go (of people, places, and things),” lyricist/guitarist Jenn Wasner reveals. In case you hadn’t guessed from our December mag we here at 247 Magazine love the wonderfully festive film Home Alone.

FREE DOWNLOAD: COLORAMA AND HURTS CHRISTMAS SONGS

Do you whack on your favourite Christmas hits CD each year and ask yourself why the past couple of decades have produced no festive classics? Gone are the good old days of the 70s, 80s and early 90s when Slade, Wham and Mariah Carey burst onto the scene with timeless classics. Instead we’ve had The Darkness, Fat Les and a heap of crap girl bands trying to freshen the Christmas music bag with a new hit. However, credible indie acts have been quietly covering their favourite Christmas songs for years, whether its the Flaming Lips doing Little Drummer Boy, Richard Hawley covering Silent Night or Grandaddy rocking with Alan Parsons in a Winterwonderland. And some brave souls have even come up with their own album of Christmas songs – including Sufjan Stevens and Thea Gilmore. Now we have Welsh group Colorama (who play the 247 Magazine-sponsored Dreamboat Presents at Start the Bus, Bristol, on December 14) and Mancunian band Hurts releasing their own Christmas songs…which are both available for free!

Colorama’s three track EP ‘Cerdyn Nadolig’ (Christmas Card) is out today (December 6) and the title track is being given out for free – see link below.

Meanwhile, Hurts have gone with the tongue in cheek title of ‘All I Want For Christmas is New Year’s Day’, which will be available for free download on iTunes on December 14 before it’s official release the following week.
‘All I Want For Christmas is New Year’s Day’ is very Hurts. It is happy yet dark and has a nostalgic Christmas feel whilst sounding very modern. Hurts have just recorded a video for the single, featuring a ‘special Hurts guest’.

Worth a listen – a nice change from the TOTP2 gang!

Wax Fang has joined Removador Recordings and Solutions this month and are offering fans a free preview of their new 17 minute single The Astronaut Part 1.
This track is the US band’s first recorded output since their 2007 release “La La Land and will be the first half of the band’s forthcoming digital EP, “The Astronaut”, due early 2011.

One of the most promising new indie acts in the UK, Revere, are offering up two free downloads prior to the release of their debut album, Hey Selim! on 6th September.
Revere, as the name suggests, should be held in awe if this debut album is anything to go by. The London-based eight piece could well be ‘our Arcade Fire’, with a gigantic orchestral sound steeped in melancholy and melody, the album could easily provide the soundtrack to a Shakespearean tragedy. With the vocal depth of Jeff Buckley and the spine-tingling beauty of Geneva, the poetry of Revere matches the tone of the haunting music, with lines such as ‘How can I ask you to forgive me, when I can’t forgive myself?’ in I Can’t (Forgive Myself).
After a triumphant set at <strong>Standon Calling, Revere are fast becoming a must see band and you’re in lick for they support Hazel Mills at Bristol Fleece on 3rd September. Tickets cost £6 and are available from the Bristol Ticket Shop.
