Cornwall’s smartest young entrepreneurs were recognised at the Hub Awards on Thursday November 24th at the Atlantic Hotel in Newquay. The Hub Awards once again rewarded those young business people making a real difference in Cornwall and celebrated the work of companies which have quickly made their mark in the county.

A panel of judges from across Cornwall’s business community came together to interview shortlisted candidates and later select the winners for each category.

Scooping the title of Employee of the Year was 26 year-old Becky Palmer. The judges were impressed by Becky’s beyond the call of duty approach as an employee for Hayle-based, Sapience HR. As Office Manager, Becky is often required to be the first point of contact for clients, but Becky went much further and in a little over 12 months introduced and implemented new systems and procedures and overhauled the company’s marketing strategy that enabled the business to provide valuable new services to their rapidly expanding client base.

This year’s Green Business of the Year award was handed to Redruth-based Piran Technologies. The judges commented upon how successful Piran Technologies had been at challenging the traditional accepted thinking of energy efficiency within the IT facilities sector both within, and most significantly outside of, their company.

27-year old Dan Parker scooped the award for Young Entrepreneur of the Year. Since setting up SMS marketing company, FireText, in September 2010, the business has in a short period of time grown considerably and won a number of significant contracts. Judges commented on how infectious Dan’s enthusiasm and passion was for doing business and how he would be firm member of Cornwall’s business community well into the future.

The Best Business Start Up award was won by Blackwater-based Cornwall Solar Panels. The judges were impressed at how quickly the founder, Tony Sampson, had been able to establish the company in the county having only set it up in November 2010. The business now employees ten people across two companies and is taking on an Unlocking Cornish Potential in January.

A special Hub Contributor of the Year Award was given to Anna Penrose from Mail Away. Anna was not only recognised as being a regular Hub attendee over the past year but for also playing her part in helping welcome new members.

Taking place at the infamous Lands End, the charity is aiming to raise awareness and lots of money for a great cause. CoppaFeel! was set up by Kristin Hallenga, who was diagnosed with secondary breast cancer at the tender age of 23. Due to several misdiagnoses and a lack of information, Kristin set up the group to ensure women of all ages know how to CoppaFeel! of their boobs to prevent late diagnosis of a cancer that kills over 12,000 women each year. Her twin sister, Malen is also on board as creative director of the charity. The girls have organised their second charity bike ride, ‘Bikin’ for Boobies,’ which will see 60 cyclists travel 130 miles from Bude on May 28th, to Lands End on May 30th. The main event will start at 2pm on May 30th, to greet the cyclists and to welcome in the general public. The day will start off with an array of local talent including the Samba Celtica, home-grown bands Gallow Glass and the Harry Peanut Show as well as local dance troops and the Swamp circus. Newton Faulkner will be playing in the main square of the Lands End visitor centre at 7:30pm, supported by Emily and the Woods. Fancy dress is also encouraged, as the cyclists will be dressing up in their infamous giant boob costumes as they roll into town. Entry will be a £10 donation, with all proceeds going to CoppaFeel!

The Eden Project is looking for singers to take part in a large scale musical project called Unplugged, which will happen on June 3 and 4. Unplugged will be a zero carbon event, created without amplifiers and performed acoustically. It will be held all over the Outdoor Biome, taking advantage of the former clay pit’s natural acoustics and showing off Eden’s ready-made amphitheatre. It will consist of around 100 voices from local musicians, composers and choirs, including the Eden and Imerys choirs and the BBC Proms Family Orchestra among others. The organisers are also looking for individual singers to take part in the event and the workshops leading up to it. The workshops, which start in May, will give the participants the chance to help shape the final piece.

Unplugged, which forms part of Eden’s tenth birthday celebrations, is part of the ongoing collaboration between Eden and Cape Farewell. Cape Farewell is a creative project that helps people to engage in the subject of climate change by combining science with music and the arts. This event has been created by London-based composer, Tim Sutton along with Vicky Long, creative producer for Cape Farewell. The music itself has been inspired by different folk traditions and the history of mining to form a piece that encourages people to think of Eden’s background, and the connection between people and the environment. Tim Sutton said: “I’m really excited by the possibility of working with Cornish musicians to create a piece which will inhabit the great outdoors. The aim is to invite people to experience Eden in a new way, with heightened attention to and appreciation of the sounds of the natural environment, reflecting upon our responsibility towards it.”

The performances will take place at 4pm on Friday June 3 and at 1pm and 4pm on Saturday June 4. The musicians will be positioned so that visitors to Eden will be able to enjoy Unplugged from wherever they are on site. For more information on the Unplugged event and how to take part, contact Amie Rey a...@edenproject.com

The Eden Project celebrates ten years of Sessions concerts this year with one of its strongest line-ups yet. The project will hit another musical landmark too, as the Fleet Foxes gig on July 1 will be the 50th Eden Session. Each date on the Sessions calendar sees a full day of festival-style live music and events take over the Eden gardens. The top headliners and special guests on the main stage in the evening are complemented by two smaller stages featuring some of the best up-and-coming acts playing throughout the day.

The confirmed acts so far for 2011 are Primal Scream and The Horrors (June 23), Pendulum and special guests to be announced (June 25), The Flaming Lips, The Go! Team and OK Go (June 30), Fleet Foxes, Villagers and The Bees (July 1) and Brandon Flowers and Mystery Jets (July 12). Eden also hosted Live8 Africa Calling in 2005 which saw the Cornish project join the likes of London, Paris, Moscow, Tokyo and Johannesburg in one of the biggest global music events ever. Live8 aimed to make poverty history and an estimated 3 billion people watched the shows.

The Eden Sessions kicked off in 2002 when Jarvis Cocker’s Pulp became the first band to grace the Eden stage. Since then PJ Harvey, Supergrass, Keane, Editors, Muse, Amy Winehouse, Lily Allen, Hot Chip, The Verve, Kaiser Chiefs, Kasabian, Paul Weller, Florence and the Machine, Jack Johnson, Mumford & Sons and many more have played at Eden. Oasis played one of their final gigs at the project in 2009, both Doves and Badly Drawn Boy have played twice and Primal Scream will be returning for their second headline turn this summer. Highlights over the years include Ricky Wilson of Kaiser Chiefs jumping into the crowd in the middle of a number, Noel Gallagher’s stab at a Cornish accent and Rufus Wainwright’s encore while dressed in drag.

John Empson, Eden’s Director of Music, said: “The beauty of the Eden Sessions is that they inspire the unexpected. We celebrate diversity in culture and over the last ten years are proud to have delivered some landmark moments from Jarvis Cocker encoring Common People in front of the Biomes, Jack White’s improvised guitar solos, Amy Winehouse’s prickly performance, Polly Harvey’s majesty and Muse and Oasis squeezing stadium sets into the clay pit. We’ve had early support shows by the likes of Florence and the Machine, Mumford & Sons, Editors and Elbow. We’ve had legends – Weller, Brian Wilson and Jack Johnson all commanding inspired performances in the best and most unique venue in the UK. There will be some magic moments on the way in 2011 – Pendulum warming up for their Beyonce support at Glastonbury, the Flaming Lips zorb and confetti party, Screamadelica Live!, Fleet Foxes’s sun-drenched harmonies and Killers frontman Brandon Flowers’s UK exclusive headline show. Here’s to the next ten years Eden!”

This year, the Sessions will be more like one-day festivals than ever before. Starting from midday on each date, Eden’s stages will play host to some of the best up-and-coming acts around, as well as poetry, story-telling and debates. The daytime programme will be split between the Stage Right Stage, situated next to the main arena, and the Biotik stage, which is in the Mediterranean Biome. Biotik is the result of a long-term collaboration between the Eden Project and Cape Farewell, a creative project that brings artists, scientists and communicators together to engage people in the subject of climate change.

There are still tickets left for this year’s Eden Sessions, all priced at £37.50 plus booking fee. To book, visit www.edensessions.com or call 01726811972. The Eden Sessions are on Facebook at www.facebook.com/edensessions and on Twitter on www.twitter.com/TheEdenSessions

This pioneering social enterprise on the north coast at Watergate Bay is throwing open its doors for a night of food and fun and the general public is invited to come and party. As always, the evening will showcase the very best local food, prepared by the restaurant’s expert and apprentice chefs.

There will be a celebratory drink served on arrival, and the team will be cooking up a very special five-course birthday menu, yet to be revealed, but the kind of dishes you can expect will be:
– Char grilled St Enodoc asparagus wrapped in smoky speck with Clarence court duck egg and Newlina’s wild rocket
– The lightest potato gnocchi ‘primavera’ with peas, broad beans, artichokes asparagus and mascarpone topped with Buttervilla’s pea shoots
– Roast aged Angus beef fillet wrapped in Deli Farm coppa, creamy borlotti beans, Newlina’s Russian kale and salsa di rafano

After the main course, choose from dishes such as Amedei chocolate tasting plate or a selection of English and Cornish cheeses, topped off with a cup of locally roasted Origin coffee. To top it all off, the birthday feast will be followed by a disco by DJ Joe Fabian so you can dance into the night.

In its short lifetime, Fifteen Cornwall has fed over 400,000 diners and more than 100 disadvantaged young people have trained as apprentice chefs. The restaurant is dedicated to investing 100% of its profits back into the training of around twenty apprentice chefs each year. At the end of an intensive 16-month training period, these young people are equipped to become professional chefs and empowered to transform their lives. The programme is as much about developing self-esteem, confidence and discipline as it is about culinary skills.

Tickets are £75 each, and you can buy them HERE

As a hugely talented producer, remixer, DJ, label boss and composer Hyper has excelled in building a loyal and global fan base as well as commanding huge respect from his peers. Having shot into the consciousness of almost every dance head and aficionado ten years ago with the eponymous Y3K compilation series, he has since released two critically acclaimed albums, remixed everyone from Foals to Futureheads, Pink to Paul Van Dyk and released some of the biggest compilation series’ over the last decade. After taking a break to work on film/TV syncs and music scores, where his tracks have featured in major films and TV series including CSI, Ugly Betty and Borat to name a few, he is ready for the next stage of the HYPER narrative to unfold. The live band features the stunning vocals of front woman Axe together with Prodigy & Pitchshifter man Jim Davies (guitar+ vox)and Hyper (keys, decks, vocals) and are preparing to hit the road with all the force of a sonic juggernaut as they currently put the final touches to their brand new live show. Having already wowed nearly every major festival across the world including Glastonbury, Roskilde and Fuji Rock to name but a few this is a rare chance to see them in Cornwall. Main support on the night comes from The Raise; a new Cornish Riff Rock Band, fronted by Rob Elton (formerly of Rootjoose). It’s been ten years since the demise of Rootjoose but the pulse of the popular Cornish outfit still beats strong in the hands of Rob Elton and his new band The Raise. With an opening set from the equally rocking north Cornwall foursome The Sum Of This who wowed Truro audience last year when they tore up the basement of the Wig & Pen, free entry and loads of drinks promotions this is a gig that everyone should have in their diaries!

The Killers frontman Brandon Flowers has been confirmed for the 2011 Eden Sessions at the Eden Project in Cornwall. Brandon Flowers will headline an Eden Session on July 12 and will be joined on the bill by special guests Mystery Jets. Brandon Flowers’s debut solo album, Flamingo, was released in September 2010 and charted at number one in the UK, giving Flowers a fourth successive chart-topping studio album, following The Killers releases Hot Fuss (2004), Sam’s Town (2006) and Day And Age (2008). Flamingo spawned the top 10 single Crossfire and saw Flowers nominated as Best Male solo artist at last year’s Q Awards. A UK headline tour following the release of the album sold out in minutes. London indie quintet Mystery Jets, founded by father and son duo Henry and Blaine Harrison, come to Eden following last year’s release of their third studio album Serotonin, which built on the success of their previous releases Making Dens and Twenty-One. Brandon Flowers and Mystery Jets join Primal Scream and The Horrors (playing on June 23), The Flaming Lips, The Go! Team and OK Go (June 30) and Fleet Foxes and Villagers (July 1) on the line-up for the 2011 Eden Sessions. More acts will be announced shortly.
Tjarko Wieringa, Eden Sessions Creative Director, said: “Brandon is one of the most recognisable and exciting artists around the moment and we’re really excited that he’ll be coming to Eden this summer. Flamingo was one of the best al-bums of last year and Brandon has proved both with The Killers and during his solo shows that he is one of the best live performers there is.”
Tickets for the Brandon Flowers Eden Session cost £37.50 plus booking fee and includes entry to the Eden Project throughout the day of the show or the day after. They will go on sale to Inside Track members at 6pm on Tuesday March 8 and then on general release at 6pm on Monday March 14. Tickets are available from the Eden box office on 01726 811972.

With a long, grand and beautiful coastline worth boasting about, Cornwall is gearing up to help celebrate the 5th annual British Tourism Week, engined by ‘Party on the Pier’. The UK still has 55 seaside piers and on Saturday 12th March, 34 of these piers across the UK are joining in the celebrations, including three Cornish piers: Falmouth, Looe and Newlyn. The Prince of Wales Pier, Falmouth will be jumping in their seaside time machine and reliving the pier’s heyday from the 1870’s – 1950’s. Local Falmouth-ers, dig out your dressing up box and dress up in the period and come and enjoy a display of photographs laying out the history and heritage of the pier between 1-2pm. In Looe, they will be going slightly more alternative and invite visitors to come and enjoy some banjo performances from midday onwards. Alongside the unique performance of banjo players, Cornish band Kath and her Bluegrass Boys will also be strumming their stuff at the Pier Café.
Newlyn’s Old Harbour will be rippling with activity from the local fleet of luggers (traditional boats), artists, heritage information and other activities. The renowned fishing harbour will be doing their part in British Tourism Week from 10am onwards when locals are encouraged to bring their sketchpads and cameras and indulge in the stunning harbour which has inspired so many artists in the past. British Tourism Week runs from 12th-20th March 2011 and helps to promote, fund and maintain some of Britain’s tourist hotspots. Tourism is Britain’s fifth largest industry, and British Tourism Week raises awareness of the importance of tourism on the British economy. Malcolm Bell, Head of Tourism at VisitCornwall, the Cornwall Development Company tourism service, comments “As one of the country’s lead tourism destinations, Cornwall is delighted to be taking part in VisitBritain’s British Tourism Week’s celebrations by hosting three of our very own Parties on the Pier. Our coastline is the longest in Great Britain and this is an excellent opportunity to showcase the diversity of our coastal scenery and maritime heritage.”
Craftsman Nick Bullen put his skills to work and created the giant chair as a thank you gift to the community of Gwynedd, North Wales, in response to the warm welcome he received when he opened his eco-friendly furniture business. He decided to firstly place the chair on top of the Welsh mountain Cadir Idris (which translates to ‘Chair of Idris’), to look over the community and for walkers to sit on and enjoy the view from the top of the mountain. After it’s fantastic story so far, the chair has been found a spectacular spot in Cornwall’s Eden Project. Diana Mullis, one of Eden’s storytellers, said: “Wild Cornwall will be the perfect spot to put this beautiful gift. The tale of the chair adds to the rich history of folklore, story-telling and the spoken word here at Eden, as well as providing a quiet place for people to sit and reflect.” The chair has had many visitors already with one of it’s first being three-year-old Grace who discovered it on her visit to The Eden Project amongst the wild Spring flowers. The Eden project has had 13 million visitors since it opened in 2001 and ensures many visitors to come will admire Nick’s chair.

Surrounded by talent and success, with a well-accredited producer and brother in her midst, Claire Nicolson upholds her extraordinary talent. With her retro and quirky observations and her likeable but whimsical lyrics, the singer collaborates with yellow Hammer on her second single, “You & I”.

To celebrate the single’s launch, she will be playing at The Rod & Line in Cornwall on March 18th, following in The Pigs Nose Inn, Kingsbridge, on Saturday March 19th in lieu of the release on March 28th through Canned Records.

Written and produced by Claire’s brother and ex-Primal Scream producer, Hugo Nicolson, the new single is the second of Claire’s releases and bringing it to the South in anticipation of her new album “52 Card Pick-up”. Her new single “You & I” is a collaboration with LA-based Yellowhammer, yet Claire’s recording experience has fallen short of the LA glamorous music industry thus far shadowing her “Sing for her Supper” tour at the end of last year where she pitched in and out of pubs offering a song or two in exchange for a meal. Her recording experiences follow closely behind on the sophisticated scale: “It was nothing so glamorous as recording it in LA,” she laughs. “I remember recording the vocal straight to Hugo’s laptop in his flat in London. The lead was too short so I had to bend down. He was very particular about the exact notes and way he wanted me to sing it. But I’ve always been a fan of my brother’s music, and was happy to oblige – and so here we are: together on the same record.” Claire’s hard work and her brothers pedantic ways paid off, as her music proves her talent in its rawest form, ensuring an incredible live performance.
