The Rider Slip Slider Pro Surf Competition was an invite only surf competition run from Porthmeor, St Ives on 21st May 2011. The winner from the 16 top UK surfers would walk away with £1000 prize money.

A clean 3ft swell groomed by offshore winds and flip flops freebies greeted the cream of British surfing talent for the inaugural running of the Rider Slip Slider Pro Invitational.

In a break from the surfing competition norm, the guys at Rider flip flops devised a unique format whereby each surfer competed in two heats with the scores from their best two waves securing a place in the four man final. The format proved popular, with the surfers encouraged to cut loose and go for the biggest moves in their repertoire as they chased the maximum two wave score.

The first round of heats were contested in typically punchy Porthmeor. With the new format taking the pressure off the guys to get some solid banker scores on the board, the pace was slower as the key was to pick off the best of the sets and try to nail some high scoring turns. Local St Ives lad Tom Lowe and Newquay’s Oli Adams set the tone early on with some big airs. Tom’s air reverse in the second heat secured him an 8.7, the wave with the highest score and loudest hoots of the day, plus the prize for the “Sickest Move”.

With perfect timing both the surfers and the waves turned it up a notch for round two, as a mid tide bank started to work with a highly rippable, wedgy peak and this provided the platform for some big moves, in particular standout waves by Gordon Fontaine of Bournemouth with a powerful, vertical forehand snap and Constantine’s Micah Lester’s vertical backhand attack on the best left hander to break all day. Johnny Fryer showed a cool head backing up a solid round one performance by pumping in some heavy scoring, setting himself up as the man to beat.

Tensions continued to build during round two as it became clear that securing a place in the final was going to be tight and with no one knowing who was going to make it through until the last heat had finished everyone gathered to hear the results. Eventually the competitors for the final were decided by the closest possible margin with Gordon Fontaine missing out by just 0.1 of a point.

The final took place in clean but highly challenging surf as the sets became less frequent. Each of the finalists had demonstrated throughout the heats that they were capable of landing the top prize but in the end it was the ability of Johnny Fryer, from Isle of Wight, who consistently got more quality turns on each wave which enabled him to walk off with the title and a cheque for £1,000.

THE FINAL RESULTS
1st – Johnny Fryer – Isle of Wight
2nd – Mark “Egor” Harris – Newquay
3rd – Tom Butler – Newquay
4th – Tom Lowe – St Ives

Orgnaisers have secured the ever popular Chase and Status and The Streets, who recently recorded their last ever album – supposedly. Mike Skinner says he is retiring so this could be one of your last chances to catch him in action with The Streets. The people behind the 10k capacity festival at Bristol’s Harbourisde have secured more than 30 acts and DJs over 3 stages over two days (June 4 and 5). These include Example, Redlight, Doom, Sub Focus, Beardyman, Annie Mac, Roots Manuva and what Bristol festival would be complete without Smerin’s Anti Social Club, CarnyVillains and DJ Derek hey? Well, they’re all on the We The People line up too. Oh and there are the obligatory after-parties in clubs and bars across the city. A spokesman for the festival said: “We The People festival gathers the most influential and important promoters and artists from around the country for a weekend of musical revelation showcasing the sound of the city in 2011.” Tickets from £35+bf from www.wethepeople.co.uk

To win a pair of tickets to We The People festival please fill the form below with your full name, address and mobile number and tell us who your favourite Bristol band/artist is. The festival-goers festival takes place at Gilcombe Farm, nr Bruton, from June 2 – 5. An uber-green festival with a laid back vibe this gem (it’s based on an organic farm for starters) features a mix of old favourites, including Lamb, The Beat and The Orb soundsystem to up and coming stars, such as Johnny Flynn and the Sussex Wit and Gabby Young and Other Animals as well as Eat Static, Banco De Gaia and Sieze The Day and more. Other exciting announcements include The Correspondents, an act which is creating a super-charged buzz on the dance music scene at the moment, with Mr Bruce, Mr Chuckles and their awesome stage show, outrageous dancing and drum and bass electro-swing fusions and Afrobeat reggae act The Soothsayers will be dubbing out with the horn section from the recent, highly acclaimed show, ‘Fela!’ about the life of Nigerian activist and afrobeat star Fela Kuti. With organically grown good vibes and conscious-party atmosphere Sunrise has 13 stages which will be showcasing a diverse range of musical experiences, from a folky knees up at the Spit n’ Sawdust to the dubby, hip-hop vibes of the visually stunning Chai Wallah’s Stage, alongside the audio visual extravaganza of the Solar Dance stage, Alchemy Chillout and speak-easy 1940’s, retro-cocktail-disco-casino at The Pussyfoot Lounge. Some say it’s like a mini Glastonbury, though we think this one puts Glasto to shame in terms of it’s eco-friendly efforts. Tickets £108+bf from www.bristolticketshop.co.uk

With it’s definite laid back folky vibe this festival is a true delight. You won’t find ravers chewing their faces off or chavs looking for a party but up to 8,000 music lovers enjoying the fab line up. Headlining this year’s festival are Britpop legends The Charlatans along with fellow Britpoppers The Bluetones, who have just announced they are splitting up at the end of the year. Hell, this could be your last chance to catch them before they disappear into the annuls of history! Other acts already confirmed include Scottish songstress Eddi Reader (famous for her hit Perfect with Fairground Attraction) and Irish folk popsters The Waterboys. If you like your music a little more worldly, feast your ears on the distinctive sound of Cornershop (famed for their 90s hit Brimful of Asha). Also on the bill you’ll find Idlewild frontman Roddy Woomble, Robyn Hitchcock and festival favourites 3 Daft Monkeys. Topping all this off we have local heroes Thrill Collins who will be cropping up here and there and manning the radio decks for the weekend. Tickets £115 from www.wychwoodfestival.com

To win a pair of tickets to this year’s Wychwood festival please fill the form below with your full name, address and mobile number and tell us what your favourite beer/ale is (if you have one!).

The Forestry Commission Live sessions are back at Westonbirt Aboretum in Gloucestershire this year. Recent years have seen a series of magical gigs under starlit skies, surrounded by one of the most beautiful wooded areas in the region and these Forestry Commission sessions have now become a staple on the festival calendar. Like the Eden Sessions at the Eden Project in Cornwall they give people a whole new gig experience. Granted the line up is a tad more mature but these could be the perfect gigs to bring your parents to. Think canvas chairs, picnics and a pleasant evening of music under the stars. The sessions kick-start with Simple Minds and Starsailor frontman James Walsh on June 17, followed by 80s pop group Erasure (famed for their hit A Little Respect) and Sophie Ellis Bextor on the 18th and Scouting For Girls, who had a hit with the infectious indie pop song She’s So Lovely, on the 19th. Local man Bryan Ferry of Roxy Music fame plays there on July 15 and Scottish indie stars Texas on July 17th with Irish boy-band Westlife playing the last session of the season at Westonbirt on July 16th. Tickets from £25+bf from www.forestrycomission.gov.uk

We’ve got a pair of tickets for the Scouting For Girls gig at Westonbirt Aboretum to giveaway. To be in with a chance of winning, please fill the form below with your full name, address and mobile number and tell us who you’d love to see play at Westonbirt. Remember to put SCOUTING FOR GIRLS in the subject line. Closing date May 1.
