Having already sold out, this will be a unique opportunity for fans to see the concert first hand. After an amazing 15 years that started with the single “Salva Mea”, Faithless – dance music pioneers Rollo, Maxi Jazz and Sister Bliss – will end their musical journey with what will undoubtedly be a spectacular farewell and will be the first dance music event to be beamed live via satellite to cinemas. The final Faithless live performance, at the end of the Passing The Baton tour, will be filmed using the latest high-definition technology and broadcast live to Showcase Cinema de Lux Bristol where Faithless fans will be able enjoy the show in incredible 5:1 surround sound for an unforgettable experience that will show cinemas how to party. Announcing the split, Maxi Jazz wrote online: “We’ve had, with our fans, the most unbelievable, epic and moving experience, stretching over years and tens of thousands of miles. Joyful, exhilarating and empowering, we never for a moment thought an affair could last this long.”
Cinema de Lux is well and truly getting in on the musical act and on Thursday, the cinema will screen “Foo Fighters: Back & Forth”, the definitive documentary of the last great American rock band as it hits the cinema screen for one night only. The riveting film about the multi-platinum band will be followed by a streamed set from the Foo Fighters playing their upcoming album “Wasting Light” from front to back recorded in Los Angeles the previous night.
Tickets (priced £12.50) are available now from the box office, online at www.showcasecinemas.co.uk or via the 24 hour ticket hotline on 0871 220 1000.

Held in the Great Hall of Cardiff Universities Students Union, the competition aimed to showcase the growing number of pole dance societies across UK Universities and show the UK how pole fitness has developed as a sport. Competitors were asked to enter in five different categories – Beginners, Intermediate, Advanced, Instructor and Team Entry. After a hard fought competition, the combined team from the University of the West of England and Bristol University left with 9 out of a possible 12 medals – including the award for ‘Overall Champions’. Kate Czepulkowski, President of the UWE Pole Society said ‘it was a fantastic event, a great way to meet other pole dance societies across the UK and the UWE/Bristol team really performed and we can’t believe how many medals we won!’ Bex Brady, winner of the Advanced Category for Bristol University said ‘I can’t believe I won! I was nervous going on stage, but pole fitness has really helped to develop my confidence as well as my strength, fitness and flexibility – I gave it everything I had!’ The UWE and Bristol Pole Dance Societies were started in 2009 by Kate Johnstone, Director of Spin City Pole Fitness in Bristol. She said: “Pole dance is a highly-skilled activity that requires strength, poise and grace. It’s also great for burning calories and extremely good fun. Here at Spin City, we teach ladies of all ages and all shapes and sizes and everyone leaves with a smile on their face.” Kate Johnstone formed Spin City in 2007 with the aim of getting more women back into exercise. A fully-qualified fitness instructor, she started teaching in Cannons Health and Fitness and now holds classes from beginner to advanced level, in her two dedicated studios, based in Clifton. Pole dance has become a popular form of exercise that burns more than 300 calories an hour with Spin City, which runs free taster sessions every Friday from 6-7pm.

“Technology has allowed DJs to become more creative artists”

Eddie Halliwell is a superstar DJ. He had his own show on Radio One and now creates his own radio show, Fire It Up. He is the only DJ to be named DJ of the Year twice and was listed in the top 20 of the Top 100 DJs for three consecutive years. Frances Allan discovers more about his DJing and where he still wants to play.

For a man who has travelled the world and played in the biggest and best known clubs on the planet, when Eddie Halliwell looks back at 2011, playing at C103 in Plymouth probably won’t be his lasting memory of the year. But that doesn’t mean the gig isn’t important, “It’s important to get around anywhere, whether it’s big or a small venue. For me as a DJ, I love playing both intimate environments in a club, and festivals and big arena shows. They are two totally different gigs but equally as enjoyable shows. To get to do the smaller venues is important as not a lot of people get to go to the bigger events.”

The difference between the clubs is obviously the size, and the proportion of people there that have intentionally gone to see Eddie. As a result the atmosphere from a crowd can vary and Eddie says “it really does depend on the scene and the different territories in the world. If people have an awareness of who I am and what I’m about, then that obviously affects the crowd because they’ll be very well up for it, but you can go to certain territories in the world where the scene’s not as developed and dance music’s quite fresh to them, and they’re not aware of it, then it’s your job to get them fired up and make them aware of you”.

Eddie’s sets are very much rooted in Dance music and he describes them as “very energetic and uplifting”, spanning across the different genres of the dance music umbrella, “going from House, to Trance, to Techno, those are the sort of areas that I cover.”

In the eyes of the Dance music community, Eddie is obviously very good at what he does, as he has many accolades to his name. Whilst Eddie appreciates the international exposure that these give him, it is not the be-all and end-all, “You can’t compare them to DJing or playing to a crowd, actually nothing can really compare to stuff like that. But when you get stuff in a poll, or whether it’s nominated, it’s very, very important to have those things to give you the exposure internationally.”

And what about the future, where to play next? Eddie says “I have played so many different places that I’ve pretty much covered everywhere. There are little pockets of areas of the world that I won’t have been to yet and I’ll try to tick all the ones off in South America”.

Whilst this sounds very glamorous, the travel takes is the only hard part of the job. “The travelling can be very tiring, when you are getting straight off a plane going to a hotel to dump your bags and then go straight to a gig. You’ve got to be careful not to go from one gig to the next without thinking about it. For me it’s one of the best things, being able to DJ and experience travelling around the world, and it is only the travelling that makes it hard work sometimes. As long as you love music, it’s an amazing scene to be involved in.”

Showcase Cinema de Lux in Bristol is upping its game and hosting some special live link ups with London.

On Wednesday 19 January at 7.15pm, the Cabot Circus cinema will present one of the greatest and most popular works of dance live on the big screen via satellite from The Royal Opera House in London. Giselle is one of the most influential of all romantic ballets, taking the audience on a journey through a Woman’s love in the face of betrayal. The title role is renowned as one of the most technically demanding and emotionally challenging in classical dance, and is always performed by leading ballerinas of The Royal Ballet.
Giselle is the must see for the New Year, and classical fans can catch it first hand at Showcase Cinema de Lux Bristol. With a breath-taking production from Peter Wright, The Royal Ballet’s finest dancers, and a captivating stage setting, this powerful piece of ballet will offer something a little different this January.

The following day (Thursday January 20) at 8.45pm Cinema de Lux Bristol will be showing Ride, Rise, Roar, a concert film that profiles Talking Heads vocalist David Byrne, followed by a live Q with the man himself beamed directly from London. Following from Jonathan Demme’s ground-breaking Talking Heads documentary Stop Making Sense in 1984, Ride, Rise, Roar is a David Byrne concert film that blends riveting onstage performances with intimate details of the creative collaborations that make the music and performance happen. Shot with multiple cameras over several concerts during the 08/09 tour, the film blends the energy and charisma of classic Talking Heads tracks with the heartfelt pathos of David Byrne and Brian Eno’s most recent collaboration, Everything That Happens Will Happen Today. Between the songs, the film achieves an unprecedented intimacy with David Byrne and the band by documenting behind-the-scenes auditions, rehearsals, and interviews with key players, while revealing the creative process that led to the show’s unique fusion of pop music and modern dance.

Tickets are available now from the cinema box office, online at www.cinemadelux.co.uk or via the 24 hour ticket hotline on 0871 220 1000. General tickets are priced at £12.50 and £10 for Insider Members – Join now for free here.

After a phenomenal 21 year residency at Pontins in Southport, dubbing it the longest running event at the centre’s since 1990, Southport Weekender are excited to announce their move to a fantastic new location, Butlins Holiday Resort in Minehead, Somerset for their 2011 festival on May 6-8.

“This will be our 5th different location for the Weekenders since we began way back in October 1987. Most of our events have been held at the Southport Pontins Site and we will forever cherish the memories, the many magical moments that have taken place there, along with the thousands of life long friendships made. However, there is always a time to move forward and grow, so to be given the opportunity to host The Weekender at the fantastic Minehead, Butlins site is very exciting and a move we look forward to embracing. I have absolutely no doubts that the wonderful crowd who have supported us over 24 years and the many new people who will be joining us will absolutely love it. We cannot wait!” / Alex Lowes (Southport Weekender)

”We are delighted that the Southport Weekender is coming to Butlins Minehead and we are looking forward to welcoming all of the weekender guests here in May for their exclusive event. Change is always a challenge for such established and respected events, but we are absolutely committed to supporting and hosting the Southport Weekender and all of its guests as the event grows and moves forward in its new home here at Minehead” / Richard Swift (Butlins, Minehead)
