The organiser of Bristol’s hugely popular Love Food festival has announced the first taste of The Spring Festival on March 26 – 27. Held at the historic Brunel’s Old Station next to Temple Meads in the heart of Bristol, The Spring Festival promises to be the city’s biggest food and drink event of 2011. Hundreds of producers, chefs, experts, writers, entertainers, artists and musicians will be joining forces with an estimated 8,000 visitors to celebrate, enjoy, and learn about all of the fantastic produce to be found in the South West. Those of you who have attended a Love Food festival before will know that, as well as delivering some hard hitting messages about sustainability and provenance, it is also a family event with a fantastically fun atmosphere. And to make the event even more accessible to everybody, founder and organiser Lorna Knapman has decided to make entry to the festival free.
“I want The Spring Festival to be enjoyed by as many people as possible,” said Lorna. “I feel it is so essential in these times that good food does not get missed off the agenda just because it is perceived to be too expensive. “Like Love Food, this festival is about bringing the countryside to the city. It’s about reconnecting with our communities and the land, enjoying the space and air that natural landscapes offer us. By working outdoors, becoming more in touch with the changing seasons around us, learning to grow our own, eating together and encouraging our children to be a big part of these things, I truly believe that it can have a massive impact. It’s all about having fun while we do it and not over complicating things or making these changes seem difficult or intimidating. The last thing we want is for people to be afraid to ask a question.”

Highlights of this year’s Spring Festival include:
The Love Food market
Seventy handpicked market stalls providing a vibrant, colourful, delicious and informative shopping experience. The market will showcase a fantastic range of amazing local produce and the opportunity for customers and producers to communicate and network, finding ways in which we can create a more sustainable future for our food.
Stalls already confirmed include: Love Patisserie, The Community Farm, The Thoughtful Bread Company, Bath Pig, Upton Cheyney Chilli Farm, Heavenly Hedgerows and many more.
The Cookery School
Some of the region’s best chefs will be sharing their skills with visitors of all ages and teaching them how you can make deliciously affordable food at home. Chefs so far confirmed include Mitch Tonks (Rockfish Grill), Freddie Bird (The Lido) and Ron Faulkner (The Muset by Ronnie).
Picnic area
Street food combined with a bar and great live music. A great place to sit down and enjoy some delicious food with family and friends and soak up the fun and colourful atmosphere. Stallholders confirmed so far include: Venison in the Vale, Bristol Ethicurean, Tom’s Pies, Orchard Pig, Bristol Beer Factory and Agnes Spencer’s Jerk Chicken.
The Garden
Workshops, talks and advice on all aspects of gardening and allotment-keeping, including culinary and medicinal herbs for sale from local growers Glenholme Herbs, bee-keeping, composting, growing fruit and vegetables and the Gorgeous Great Cake Café serving tea, coffee and light refreshments.
The Beach
A fun filled room with a hard-hitting message. Come and enjoy some delicious local seafood from the BBQ, relax in a deck chair, listen to the sound of the sea and fill yourselves with knowledge and inspiring information about what we can do to protect it. Sandcastles included!
The Rant Room
Led by Rude Health’s co-founder and chief ranter Nick, our small but proudly outspoken gang isn’t afraid of standing up for real, honest food – the way it should be. Join passionate food producers and famous foodies as they step onto the hay bale and up to the microphone to voice their opinions.
The Taste Theatre
Fun, informative and delicious tasting sessions with some local experts including Bristol Beer Factory and Orchard Pig in a super ‘Spring Taste Off’.
Art Exhibition
Local artists will show the beauty and wonder of the natural world, food in all its glory and revealing photo stories about the processes and results of local initiatives. All of these things take part under one roof with a fantastic soundtrack, a great atmosphere, lots of happy food loving visitors, massive amounts of bunting, straw bales and fun. Come and join the party!

The Spring Festival will take place at Brunel’s Old Station, Temple Meads, Bristol, on Saturday March 26 (10.30am-6pm) and Sunday March 27 (11am-5pm). Entry is free. More info at www.lovefoodfestival.com

There are so many slushy love songs out there it’s hard to know where to turn, which is why we’re making things easy for you. We’ve got some compilations to get you in the mood. First up is Your Songs (inspired by Ellie Goulding’s recent cover of the Elton John classic) which features the signature tune as well as Take That, Duffy, Bruno Mars, Brandon Flowers and Cheryl Cole. The second is Me To You, named after those much loved grey teddy bears. It includes a selection of hits, from classic to funky and soul to swing. Artists include Blondie, Diana Ross, Eva Cassidy, Frank Sinatra, UB40 and Louis Armstrong. To enter simply fill in your full name, address (without this we won’t be able to send you the CDs!) and mobile number making sure you put wither YOUR SONGS of ME TO YOU in the subject line depending on which CD you want. Feel free to enter both but you will need to fill out a separate form for each – one with the subject YOUR SONGS and another with the subject ME TO YOU. Closing date Feb 28.

Arriving through Cardiff City Council’s ever-expanding bus station is not the best entry to a gig, but this was one evening that we did not expect. Excited at the prospect of seeing the Airborne Toxic Event for their third Cardiff gig (the first two at the now defunct Barfly) and seeing them last year at Bristol Anson Rooms with their full stage set, how would they cope with the smaller venue again? The Millennium Music Hall is a seemingly compact intimate venue, but it holds some 800 or so all able to see the stage and enjoy the superb sound system.

Before we could see the answer to our question, the charming chap behind what is fast-becoming Cardiff’s busiest live venue (apparently known as Budgie to his friends) told us to be ready for a surprise…what a surprise! Leaping onto the stage as support was none other than Johnny Borrell with his new band (not Razorlight mark 2) but currently with no name, according to Freddie the new bass player sporting a fabulous stovepipe hat and looking like a wild-west frontiersman. Playing a handful of smaller venues, this band is becoming tight and loud.
Borrell and his band opened with Somewhere Else, a rousing start with a fiercer driven sound, followed up with In the Morning and then they ploughed through some of the back catalogue including Stumble and Fall, plus some cracking new songs..watch out for Killer Casanova. A full set of 10 tracks for those who bothered to turn up for the support band! A lesson for us all perhaps?
Sounding at times like a young Lou Reed and wearing his trademark white vest, shimmying around the stage with verve and passion, linking closely with his new band, Borrell looked at home and back to his best. The sound is heavier, harder, a bit rougher and I can see “the Band with No Name” and their charismatic frontman back to the top very soon. Catch them wherever you can…

Proudly sporting his Spillers Records T shirt that he kept pointing at, Daren sat down behind his kit as the Airborne Toxic Event launched straight into Wishing Well , the perfect song with the words “get on the f**ing train and leave today”…with so many parked buses outside the venue, but I suspect that was lost on this hard-working, creative indie band from LA. Immediately currying favour with the Cardiff crowd (Mikel said that the Welsh were the best looking in the UK, to loud cheers), they ran through an exhausting set that early on showed them showcase some new tracks form their as-yet untitled forthcoming 2011 album: Numb, Welcome to your Wedding day (this one will grow and grow in the live shows) before they crashed headlong into Something New.
Unexpectedly, during a lively version of Missy and with a wicked glint in his eye Mikel and this clever band slipped into a country version of Springsteen’s I’m on Fire followed by a rockabilly of Johnny Cash Folsom Prison Blues with the band flinging themselves into their work, deserving of so much bigger audiences (Michael Eavis, take note).
With almost no break except the slightly quieter Doesn’t Mean a Thing, referring to his parents’ generation, this practised and polished group of excellent and talented musicians kept the crowd whipped up with a run through Happiness in Overrated, Gasoline, Papillon, Does this Mean You’re Moving on? before the huge favourite anthem Sometime around Midnight, with the swooping viola of Anna Bulbrook, the sweeping guitar of Steve Chen and the melodic bass of Noah Harmon added to the pounding drums laid down by Daren Taylor complementing the at times raucous vocals of Mikel Jolet, this was a happy, ecstatic, jumping Millennium Music Hall. All I Ever Wanted was followed by Mikel proclaiming that he became a musician so he could perform songs like Innocence…a snapshot of the Airborne Toxic Event themselves: carefully crafted, clever, artistic and then driven and loud with a heart and rhythm that would stand up alongside any band anywhere and really deserves worldwide recognition.
Thanking the audience for their continued support, Mikel commented that they are not played on the radio in the UK, so have no exposure to the mass market. With this sort of commitment and energy (can there be a band anywhere that gives more than the ATE?) they will be so big soon…Glastonbury has to be their next port of call.
