Paignton Zoo’s rare Sumatran tiger cubs are one year old.  To celebrate their first birthday, Paignton Zoo is holding a week of events during February half-term called Terrific Tigers.

Half term activities will take place in the area around the tiger enclosure. They will include face painting, a tiger task trail sheet and a tiger-themed touch table with a tiger skin and a replica tiger skull for visitors to touch. Tiger games will include pin the tail on the tiger, spot the stripes and a body part matching game. There will also be free tiger masks for children.

In addition, visitors can attend meet the tiger keeper sessions at the tiger enclosure at 12.15pm each day.  For toddlers there will be tiger tales at story time in Hullabaloo, Monday to Thursday at 11:30am and tiger craft activities for under fives in Hullabaloo, Monday to Thursday, 1pm to 3pm

The cubs were born on 5th February 2009 to female Banda and male Tenang. The three are males Aryo (meaning hero) and Bintang (meaning star) and female Surya – named after a word for the sun.

Paignton Zoo spokesperson Phil Knowling told us, “The cubs are doing really well. They have come on in leaps and bounds – quite literally! With Valentine’s Day and the start of the Chinese year of the tiger coming up, it’s a great time to adopt a tiger from Paignton Zoo.”

Meanwhile, the end of half term marks the start of Fairtrade Fortnight 2010. The annual event will be launched in the foyer at Paignton Zoo over the weekend of 20th February. The Zoo will be raising awareness by providing an activity trail for visitors.

A range of Fairtrade exhibitors will be in the Zoo foyer, running activities, competitions, selling products and raising the profile of Fairtrade Fortnight.
