CODE DRINKS BACKLASH
Code nightclub in Cardiff has caused uproar in the city as they promote their new entry and drinks deal. Local police, doctors and landlords have condemned the Weekender £10 entry and 10 free drinks deal as ‘lunacy’. Speaking in the South Wales Echo, a club spokesman said that the deal will more than likely be banned under the Government’s forthcoming crackdown on promotions that encourage binge drinking, but until they come into force on 6 April, there is nothing the authorities can do. Police fear that this promotion will increase violence in the city centre as drunken revellers encounter each other. Nick Newman, chairman of Cardiff Licensees Forum, which represents the majority of clubs and pubs in Cardiff (but not Code) said, ‘This kind of clearly irresponsible promotion is not welcome in the city centre any more,’ and said it had the potential to overshadow the hard work done by the forum and police to curb Cardiff of it’s boozy reputation. ‘This is exactly the kind of thing we have worked hard to eradicate’ he said. However, as the Code nightclub Weekender promotion proves, times are hard for the late night industry and they are using whatever promotions they can to attract business.
