VIBRAPHONIC FESTIVAL – MARCH 5 – 21
Exeter Vibraphonic Festival have confirmed the full line up for what will be the first music festival of the year in the Southwest. Highlights this year include Mercury Music Prize winner Speech Debelle with Gift of Gab from Blackalicious; a double bill of the Utah Saints and Scratch Perverts; The Blockheads; Dub Pistols; the salsa sounds of Sierra Maestra; Beastie Boys DJ Mix Master Mike; the nu-soul of Omar; ambient house pioneers The Orb; nu-jazzers Led Bib and the Neil Cowley Trio; blues stalwart Johnny Winter and the Reggae Reggae Sauce star of Dragon’s Den, Levi Roots, who will mixing up his music with some live cooking on stage!
During the first weekend there is the second Analogue To Digital music technology expo – a big hit from last year – where you can try out and learn about new digital music technology, whether you’re a DJ, musician, composer or producer.
Festival promoters have also commissioned a new jazz symphony from Devon-based saxophonist and composer Pete Canter. He’s putting together a 10-piece outfit – The October Ensemble – especially to perform the piece – Sketches – which involves both jazz and classical musicians.
This year, for the first time, the festival has a bit of a theme – light – which will make sense when you see the brochure and website. Organisers commissioned a local photographer, Simon Hammett, to capture the city in a different way and his photos are featured heavily – the city as you’ve never seen it before. He’s also got an exhibition at the Phoenix during the festival.
