RED BULL ACADEMY HITS BRISTOL
In the midst of the London season, the Red Bull Music Academy comes to Bristol on Fri 26 & Sat 27 Feb to celebrate the vibrant creativity of this cultural hub. With a weekend of music, talks and workshops from some of the best musicians, producers, industry heads and technicians from Bristol and beyond, the Academy will navigate the city’s visionary past and enrich its musical future.
The Bristol arm of the Red Bull Music Academy will lay its foundations amid the creative bohemia of Stokes Croft. Setting up camp in a grade II listed Baroque cinema from 1914, Metropolis on Cheltenham Rd will host the Friday night event and Saturday’s Academy workshops.
Friday sees performances from funk originator, James Brown collaborator and JB Horns founder Pee Wee Ellis, alongside Andreya Triana – alumnus of Red Bull Music Academy 2006 in Melbourne. Dubkasm brings a pan-Atlantic project uniting South American sounds with dubwise productions and collaborations with bona fide roots vocalists. Finally, Minotaur Shock is a Bristol resident and electronica stalwart having released on 4AD and Melodic records and remixed some of the UK’s best-known bands.
After a good night’s sleep, Metropolis will again be the host for a session of workshops and performances. The Bug shares his newest project King Midas Sound; Dynamite MC hosts an MC production workshop; Pee Wee Ellis talks about life with James Brown; Dubstudio runs a vinyl cutting demo, Berlin’s Dixon shares tips and knowledge about succeeding in independent music, and much more.
The summit closes on Saturday night with a Futureboogie Red Bull Music Academy Special at Bristol’s Motion nightclub. Detroit techno legendTheo Parrish joins Berlin house supremo Dixon and the Futureboogie crew, while room two celebrates the genre-defying sounds of Bristol’s most recent bass export with Appleblim, Headhunter, Peverelist and a special live set from King Midas Sound.
