THE EDEN PROJECT HOSTS BRIGHT YOUNG THINGS 2011
The Eden Project’s youth talent showcase Bright Young Things will be returning for the third year running on Saturday January 29.
The show will take place across the Eden site, culminating in four hours of live music in the Mediterranean Biome from 2pm. Entrants will also be putting on dance demonstrations, displays of visual art and photography and reading original writing in the Core building from midday. The Core will also host the Marketplace of Ideas, which will be familiar to people who have been to Eden’s monthly Arts Café night. Here, young people can find out more about creative opportunities in the South West. All entrants were asked to come up with work themed around the subject of “home”. Headlining the music on the Mediterranean Biome stage will be Penzance indie four-piece Gary and the Minefield, whose bright, punchy guitar lines and brash vocals are reminiscent of early Arctic Monkeys. Blues rockers Propaganda from south east Cornwall will also be on the bill as will singer and Penryn pianist Emily Taylor, whose simple arrangements of vocals and keys show off her Dido-esque voice. Shade of Red are a ska-tinged indie-pop band from St. Ives and Jethro Lynch is a solo guitarist from Penzance who plays gentle, folky instrumental pieces inspired by his surroundings. Alice Chaplin and Sophie Weekes are an acoustic guitar and vocal duo from west Penwith and Abee Hague is a guitarist and singer-songwriter from Lostwithiel. Rounding off the bill are Penzance indie-rockers The Signs. More than 40 artists, writers and photographers will be exhibiting alongside the musicians.As part of Eden’s community programme, under-18s will be admitted free for the whole weekend. For everyone else, entry to all the Bright Young Things events are included in standard Eden admission.
