The Drum Theatre, Plymouth has been nominated for one of the most sought after awards in theatre. It’s been nominated for an Olivier Award in the category of Outstanding Achievement in an Affiliate Theatre for its production The Empire, working with The Royal Court Theatre.

The Olivier Awards are among the most highly regarded in the industry, and past winners have included Judi Dench, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Alan Bennett. The Empire is a war drama set in Helmand, examining the politics of occupation at home and abroad. Gary, a British soldier, and Hafizullah, his Afghan colleague, guard an injured young prisoner, Zia, found in the heat of the battle.

The production transformed the theatre into a dilapidated war zone, and was highly acclaimed by critics. The Drum Theatre is competing against Blasted, Lyric Hammersmith; Ivan And The Dogs, Soho Theatre and ATC and Les Parents Terribles, Trafalgar Studios 2 and Donmar Warehouse.

The awards ceremony will be held at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, London on 13 March, with live coverage on BBC Radio 2, and on the BBC red button.
