REVIEW: WILD BEASTS AT GLOUCESTER GUILDHALL (13/05/11)

Mercury Prized nominees Wild Beasts didn’t quite reflect their name at Gloucester Guildhall. They were neither wild. Nor beast like. The band played to a tame capacity crowd that at times felt like they could have been at an art exhibition. Wild Beasts are never going to be full on rock and roll due to the delicate nature of their songs, although you would expect a certain magic live, which never arrived. Long pauses in between songs only dragged the gig out and lost the audiences’ attention. Highlights of the night would have to be their biggest hit ‘We Still Got The Taste Dancin’ On Our Tongues’ and the bubbly ‘Hooting & Howling’. Their song ‘Underbelly’ has been used in adverts for Santander and BMW, which says a lot for the band; namely, stick to writing advert songs or work on your performance. The highly acclaimed band simply didn’t deliver at the Guildhall and must have left some fans disappointed. Myself included.
