The South West DJ of the Year has found another clear winner for 2011! The Falmouth collective, Hong Kong Ping Pong took a substantial amount of votes in what could well be one of the most popular DJ of the Year competitions to date. Hong Kong Ping Pong are DJ trio Morphosis (aka Jack Nash), Fat Harry (aka Dave Raybould) and Spinforth (aka James Evans) based in Falmouth, Cornwall. The award acknowledges the efforts of the trio and their drive to put that extra something into their club nights. Brought together by a mutual love of fun time party tunes plucked from a broad spectrum of genres they play an eclectic mix including everything from Ghetto Funk, to Breakbeat, to Dubstep, to Hip Hop, to Peruvian pipe music (okay maybe not the last one) the last few years have been spent working their musical magic to establish their monthly night as one of the most vibrant, unique, and fun nights in the South West.

From the humble roots of a weekly internet radio show radio show (Beating The Crates on www.nsbradio.co.uk), to the Godzilla-like conquering of the South West club scene, they have kept the three F’s, ‘fresh, funky, and fun (and feathers…no, wait)’ as its mantra. Picking up along the way such accolades as a 2011 Breakspoll nomination for ‘Best Small Event’, 2011 NSB award for the ‘Best Alternative Radio Show’, the 2009 Best Littlesouth DJ of the Year award for Morphosis, and Fat Harry once placed highly recommended in the Marldon Apple Pie Fair.

2011 and has seen them broaden their musical horizons, releasing tunes, remixing others, Mixtape #7made a long awaited appearance , they’ve become a central part of the www.ghettofunk.co.uk community featuring on the Icons Remixed Albums and Spinforths ‘Weekly Soundcloud Scour’ which is rapidly emerging as an internet phenomenon, invitations to play far and wide supporting Djs of the highest calibre such as Krafty Kuts, A-Skillz and The Freestylers, it really has been an excellent year… roll on 2012

Here is what they had to say about being named DJ of the Year 2011:
Congratulations on winning DJ of the Year 2011, how do you feel about it?

Well as you can imagine we’re really very chuffed about it indeed! What an absolute honour! There are so many great dj’s and crews in the SW who are doing amazing stuff so to come out top of the pile is really very rewarding. A big thank you to all that placed a vote and big ups to all those throwing parties week in week out, there wouldn’t be a scene with out you so a big communal pat on the back is in order!
What can people expect if have not been able to catch you play live?
Fun time party tunes plucked from a very broad spectrum of genres, it’ a real eclectic mix including everything from Ghetto Funk, to Breakbeat, to Dubstep, to Hip Hop, to Reggae, to D n B etc etc the list goes on!

You’ve had a great DJ year, what has been your highlight?
It’s been such a great year picking just one highlight is pretty much impossible, our first release on Bombstrikes (a collaboration with one of our favourite artists Pimpsoul) has to come pretty close to the top. Mixtape #7 made a long awaited appearance , becoming a central part of the ghettofunk.co.uk community, featuring on the Icons Remixed Albums and Spinforths ‘Weekly Soundcloud Scour’ rapidly emerging as an internet phenomenon. Fat Harry Squid dancing for Gilles Peterson. Our 4th Birthday with Stickybuds, Slim Goodgroove and Will Streetwise. Playing in Australia and New Zealand. DJing under a viaduct. Getting messy at Aeon Festival was a standout. Invitations to play far and wide supporting Djs of the highest calibre such as Cut La Roc, Featurecast, Krafty Kuts, A-Skillz and The Freestylers, it really has been an excellent year…

What plans do you have for 2012 and beyond?

Well we’re looking to push on, try and break out of the SW scene, spreading the HKPP love far and wide  and with a little help from some very close friends of HKPP (all very hush hush at the moment) hopefully we’ll be able to achieve just that. We have a number of tunes that are starting to take shape in the studio that we’re pretty excited about, and remix offers coming in thick and fast. There are a bunch of festival bookings in the offing which we’re really looking forward to… but 1st and foremost it’s another popularity contest that we have our sights pinned on, we’d love to scoop another International Breakbeat Awards  nomination for either ‘Best Small Event’ or Beating The Crates for ‘Best Radio Show’ at Breakspoll 2012, if anyone felt like helping us out they could do that HERE. And when all is said and done… love your balls.xx
