International Record Store Day takes place on Saturday (April 21), with independent shops across the region celebrating the fact that their still around and embracing the physical format in light of mp3s and technological advances.

From Plymouth to Bristol and Cardiff to Cheltenham, there’s bound to be something going on near you. Sadly, we can’t list everything here but here are some of the highlights for you…

For true music lovers, Record Store Day is a testament to the joy of owning that ‘special find'; and Bristol’s largest independent record shop ‘Head’ – located in The Mall, Broadmead – is proud to be taking part in it.

Head Bristol will feature live performances in store from four of Bristol’s finest independent bands, plus a limited edition art-print up for grabs and an exclusive compilation cd of local bands to commemorate the day.

Live performances will take place in store between 2 – 6pm, with a stellar line up featuring:

The Naturals – an awesomely loud yet bittersweet band. The Naturals put the rock back into post-rock by mixing lovely indie choruses with tidal waves of distortion. www.myspace.com/naturalsmusic

SJ Esau – Experimental hip hop meets indie angular noise with Anticon Records’ finest one man band. www.sjesau.co.uk

Isola – Sometimes loud, sometimes quiet, always beautiful. Isola create monolithic soundscapes which tug at the heartstrings. www.facebook.com/isolaband

Squeeze Me Macaroni – One small girl plus one massive pedal board making a quirky post-rock racket. (www.soundcloud.com/squeeze-me-macaroni)

Details of all the releases for Record Store Day can be found at http://www.recordstoreday.com; and here, (in the apt. words of Rob from High Fidelity) is Head Music’s Serena Cherry’s “top five records” from the list of Record Store Day exclusives this year:

Le Bon’s Time Could Change Your Mind, a languid acoustic number that showcases Le Bon’s unique style and Nico-like cool. Produced by Jonathan Wilson at Bright Eyes’ Five Star Studio in LA, the track is new and unreleased track and will not appear on the forthcoming album.

Neville Staple, one of the founding members of the iconic ‘2-Tone’ band The Specials will be at Rise Cheltenham on 21 April 2012 for this year’s Record Store Day celebrations. Neville will be signing copies of The Specials ‘Live in 2011’ exclusive Record Store Day release featuring live tracks from last year’s sell out tour.
