The St Ives Festival Pit-firing Event woll take place on September 10 & 11, 2012.

The St Ives September Festival Pit-firing Event – in collaboration with the Porthminster Gallery, St Ives – is returning for its second year on Porthmeor Beach, St Ives. Experienced artists Mary Kaun-English, Martyn Perryman and Jo Rowley will be demonstrating the pit-firing process from start to finish as they use the method to publicly fire a new collection of ceramics on the beach, below the Tate St Ives. The two-day event, comprising of the excavation and lighting of the fire-pit on Monday 10 September, and the unearthing and revealing of the fired work on Tuesday 11th September, is free and open to all.

Mary Kaun-English, an internationally exhibited sculptor specialising in pit-firing, will also be giving an introductory talk on the process and her work prior to the beach event in the Porthminster Gallery at Westcott’s Quay on Monday 10 September at 11am. Tickets for the talk are free from the gallery, but limited to just 20 places.

The works produced from the firing event will be available to view and for purchase at the Porthminster Gallery at Westcott’s Quay, on display for the remainder of the St Ives September festival in the exhibition ‘Formed by Fire’.

This event, which last year resulted in twenty-four ceramic pieces fired on the beach, is an exciting opportunity for all to witness the pit-firing method as well as to watch this group of artists’ individual experimentations with its effects.
