UK’S BIGGEST FRESHERS’ FAIR TO TAKE PLACE AT UWE BRISTOL
Over 10,000 UWE Bristol students are set for a fun-packed experience at the UK’s biggest Freshers’ Fair on Friday 21 September, 11:00-16:00 at the University’s Exhibition and Conference Centre on Frenchay Campus.
Hosted by the University Students’ Union (UWESU), this year’s Freshers’ Fair is the biggest yet – filling the impressive 4000 square metre venue with 200 UWESU sports clubs, societies and commercial stalls, all competing for students’ attention with freebies, giveaways, demonstrations and displays.
VP Societies and Communications, Annabelle Turner said, “UWESU hosts the biggest Freshers’ Fair in the country; it is something that you cannot afford to miss! We have a diverse range of performances throughout the day and it is your chance to come and meet all of the Sports, Societies and Networks we have to offer. It is a day filled with fun and excitement and a chance to really get involved. I am a Law graduate and I can tell you now that I couldn’t have got through my degree without my sports teams there to provide that social outlet from the stresses of uni life. It is the best way to make new friends and settle in, and it is ultimately the best way to make the most of your student experience. You will find a family away from home. So come along and get involved!”
Whatever your interest, new and returning students will have a huge range of UWESU sports clubs, societies and networks to choose from.
Is sport your passion? Follow in the footsteps of double Olympic rowing champion and UWE graduate, Pete Reed, who learnt to row by joining UWE Boat Club. UWE Windsurf will also have a surf simulator for students to try and weather-permitting, UWE Climbing will be demonstrating the climbing wall.
For budding thespians, why not get involved with The UWE Drama Society who have recently performed at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Member, Natasha Garbutt said, “I really love being part of the UWE Drama Society. We put on about five shows a year, but there’s so much more to gain from it than just performing. I’ve found it a real confidence booster and it’s a great way of developing your people and organisational skills. We also do lots of volunteering at hospitals, charities and local schools which is really rewarding. There’s also a great social scene and I’ve made so many good friends through the society.”
Interested in volunteering and making a difference to society? SIFEUWE’s (Students In Free Enterprise) international project – Empower Kenya – is committed to improving the quality of life for Kenya’s children. The group recently returned from a two week volunteering trip to a Kenyan orphanage near Mombasa where they installed a biodigester, a safer more sustainable way of producing fuel.
UWESU also has around 20 networks for students to join. Networks are an ideal way to meet people who share similar identities, cultures and beliefs.
Students will enjoy live music, entertainment and refreshments throughout the day as they make their way around the Fair. Acts include former Pole Fitness President and Got to Dance semi finalist, Bendy Kate and some surprise guests.
Around 100 local and national companies will have stalls at the Fair including Showcase cinema, Za Za Bazaar, Virgin Media and Bunker nightclub.
Freshers’ Fair will take place on Friday 21 September, 11:00-16:00 at the University’s Exhibition and Conference Centre on Frenchay Campus.
