REVIEW: JESSIE J AT PLYMOUTH PAVILION (27/10/11)
There’s not much to be said about Jessie J’s performance other than wow. From the moment the curtain rose-up until the moment it closed, the energy that girl boasted was incredible. Aside from probably the most enviable legs in pop, Jessie J is a remarkable artist. Selling over 1 million albums and 3 million singles worldwide, Jessie J is pretty much as big of a star that you can get.
With an incredibly fun performance of ‘Who’s Laughing Now’ and a hairs-stand-up-on-the-back-of-your-neck performance of ‘Nobody’s Perfect’, Jessie’s personality shines through beautifully as you really believe every word she’s saying. Getting the audience singing along, almost like a mantra, it’s like everyone truly believes the words that they are singing. Jessie one, critiques nil. With a reputation like Jessie’s it’s going to be hard to stay grounded, but she does. A true Essex girl, Jessie never lets herself be anyone other than herself. Down to earth and honest, she has a good head on her shoulders: ‘Make sure you love yourself before anyone else can love you. Always be true to who you are.’
But we can’t forget her voice: truly remarkable. Renowned for her incredible multi-octave voice and long gone the days of singing in her bedroom, if possible, Jessie J is even better live than she is on her album; Who You Are. She boasts so much energy it’s impossible not leave the crowd buzzing and wanting more. She must have thought it went well herself as just Minutes after the show Jessie tweeted ‘WOW!! I am so happy!!! Plymouth that was EPIC!!!!.’
With a remix of Bob Marley’s ‘One Love’ thrown in to her performance of ‘Stand Up’ and an incredible cover of Luther Vandros’ ‘Never Too Much’ it’s literally impossible to stop your foot from tapping along to the music. The thing about Jessie is that even though these songs are all-time classics, she still manages to make them her own. Then with an extended remix of ‘Do it like a Dude’ and moves to envy even Mick Jagger, not only can that girl sing, but she can really move. With her natural rhythm and sexy moves, it’s apparent Jessie oozes confidence both onstage and offstage. With her attitude seeping in through her songs it’s then you remember why you love her.
Guest star Devlin joined her for an energetic performance of ‘Price Tag’ was next on the set list and she did not disappoint. Closing the show with ‘Domino’, the rock ‘n’ roll beats of the song left the audience gagging for more but unfortunately it was time to go home, back to reality after an epic, fun and honest evening with Jessie J. With her contagious smile and her wicked sense of humour we’ve yet to see even more of the unbelievably talented Jessie J and her incredible music, and boy we can’t wait. But until then, ‘Heartbeats’, always remember to be true to who you are.
