On Saturday 21 July it’s Torbay’s turn to play host to the national Fish is the Dish tour. Fish is the Dish is a consumer campaign run by Seafish, a non departmental Government body which provides a wide range of services to the fishing industry.

Phil Palfrey, Project Manager, Seafish England, said: “Fish is extremely healthy, low in fat , high in protein and a great source of omega-3. Here on the South Coast we are extremely lucky to be surrounded by some amazing seafood that gets landed and shipped throughout the UK and Europe making its way to family dinner tables and some of the top restaurants in the land.

The Torbay fleet is important to the South Coast and the UK industry. Seafish are working hard in the South Coast to serve the fishing industry from organising training to working with producers and suppliers.” Heather Middleton from Fish is the Dish said: “Despite consumers being aware of the health benefits of eating fish, there is still an underlying misconception that any type of seafood is a difficult mealtime option. That’s one of the reasons Fish is the Dish was launched by Seafish – to help show families just how easy cooking with seafood can be and encourage confidence to try different types of fish at home.”

Two sessions will be held: 11:00am-12:30pm or 2-3:30pm at South Devon College (Long Road, Paignton). Mums and Dads, Grans and Grandads will be given tips on buying and preparing seafood, as well as getting the chance to see live cooking demonstrations and even try their hand at preparing their own dishes. Responsible sourcing and seasonality will play a big role in the day and is designed to give consumers more confidence in cooking and buying fish.
