REVIEW: PLEASURE PRINCIPLE 2013, NEWQUAY (27-29/04/13)
Pleasure Principle, a new weekender celebrating electronic music and beyond touched down in Newquay last weekend, to celebrate Scottish event producers Numbers and Dedbeat’s 10 years anniversary. Their first major event South of the border had a decent attendance all making the most of the gorgeous Newquay coast, friendly atmosphere and sunny weather bringing techno, electro and bass heads from all over together for three days of electronic bliss.
The forward thinking line up mixed up fresh talent with established artists that all provided top sounds throughout the entire weekend with Friday launching the festival into full swing with Downtown and Uptown stages being the busiest, and while the Midtown stage could have been a little closer to the action making the party traveling a little easier, it still made for a great place to recoup and try something a little different. As you would expect from a rave in a holiday camp, all the arcades, bars and other random amusements were open for business, but more importantly all stages were jumping to the sound of Funktion One bass, with excellent stage and lighting production in all.
Friday Downtown headliner Robot Hood (Underground Resistance/Detroit techno legend) was a highlight bringing his minimal sound to Cornwall’s north coast to then be followed by one of the UK’s freshest talents Blawan who was tearing the place to pieces with his own brand of assault techno. With the sun shining again on Saturday, the party fired up again late in the afternoon giving those that partied in the very early hours time to recharge under canvas or in one of the well equipped caravans on site. With the festival stages back into the swing of it, the music shifted from a funky daytime vibe to heavier grooves that the crowd went wild for. Highlights from the Uptown stage on the Saturday would be Ben UFO bringing his pick and mix style of electronica to Kernow for a crowd went wild for everything he was dishing out! Another highlight on the Saturday Downtown stage was JRocc (beat junkies/stones throw) sharing his eclectic selection of rare and choice tunes setting the pace for the rest of the evening
Overall the weekend was a wicked party, produced with taste and daring to do something a little different than the mainstream with its music, ethics and production! We’ll be looking forward to seeing this grow next year!
