‘Laugh With Laraaji’ laughter meditation workshop – https://www.musicglue.com/qu-junktions/events/8-jun-14-laugh-with-laraaji—laughter-meditation-workshop-arnolfini/

A super vibrant night of fascinating auteur electronics, scintillating AV, fractured funk, machine and human rhythm aces, new age zithers and the ghost of a 12th century nun.

There are a few touchstones in the work of Oneohtrix Point Never, but composer Daniel Lopatin’s real magic power is his ability to rewire, unground and transfigure music and images into a mise-en-scène of wild depths and tricky shallows. His Warp Records debut R Plus Seven is being held up as a major departure, but really it is just another brilliant piece in the puzzle … a piece that grows tangentially over his exquisite repertoire of imaginative and abstract musical outputs. It may glide and glisten with ease, but it contains that disruptive and hypnotic OPN DNA in equal measure. Welcome back to Bristol, come dis-guide us with your images and sound structures.

With all of its aural hallways and corridors, Oneohtrix Point Never’s R Plus Seven is a kind of choose-your-own adventure, reflecting the complexly structured yet utterly freewheeling process behind its creation. Concludes Lopatin, “I aimed to make a record that had this sort of digital plasticity to it. There is a conversation in the world right now about super-computing power becoming mainstream, rendering anyone a producer. That is aimed directly at my generation and onwards. No one in their right mind would make this record other than myself, but I did so using a palette that is readily available. I’m concerned about these new notions of technological freedom because, although there is no pedagogy saying, ‘this is how you make a record’ anymore, there is a highly regimented and socialized cultural marketplace that reinforces style, which is utterly inspiring to me. It’s the control I need to introduce my variations. It’s the process of saying ‘thanks, but no thanks.’”

Laraaji & Sun Araw: ‘The Play Zone’ is a special show featuring two remarkable pan-generational American artists, each of whom has carved their own sweet 21st century spiritual sphere in musical space and time. Both drink deep at the well of mysticism in very different ways to produce their own special strain of free-souled psychedelia. New York-based meditator, laugh-master and celestial musician Laraaji celebrates the release of a comprehensive celebration of his audio works on All Saints Records/WARP by interconnecting with LA composer/multi-instrumentalist/visual artist Cameron Stallones aka Sun Araw, whose stunning new album ‘Belomancie’ (out now on Sun Ark/Drag City) floods his already rich sonic palette in new light, colour and fidelity. Tonight Laraaji, Cameron and Sun Araw accomplice Alex Gray enter The Play Zone, settlin’ in, triangle formation, for adventures in zither, electronics, acoustics and outernational sound sources that will ravish the senses.

Oscilanz is a new trio formed of Charles Hayward (This Heat, About Group), Ralph Cumbers (Bass Clef, Some Truths) & Laura Cannell (Horses Brawl, LCAB duo). They found each other, and somehow found the intention of interpreting the music of Hildegard Von Bingen, a 12th century nun and mystic, herbalist and inventor of her own language, who was also a prolific composer of some very beautiful pieces of music. The group take off using very small fragments of her music as a basis to go far into pastures new, bypassing all ideas of correct ways-to-perform and instead connecting with the spirit and magic of the music in a very subconscious and non-verbal way. The melodies take a a life of their own and Oscilanz bears fruit. Trombone, drums, violin, recorders, voices and electronics all blend together to produce something beguiling and hard-to-pin down. The word Oscilanz is taken from the Lingua Ignota, the language Hildegard invented. It means ‘October’.
