BIG CHILL BAR BRISTOL JANUARY EVENTS: BEDMO DISCO AND BRISTOL HI FI
The Big Chill Bar in Bristol has some stonking nights coming up in the New Year, and with free entry to ALL events at the bar, this is recession busting partying at it’s best!
Check out Bedmo Disco (pictured) on Friday 8 January with Sell By Dave and Five-Stylez – straight outta Bedminster, these chaps will have you grooving to some hot disco sounds. First hooking up in the studio in early 2007, Sell By Dave and Five Stylez spent many a long night crafting re-edits of disco, funk and soul records. They sent some of their edits out to DJs and producers they liked, and the reaction was outstanding. One track in particular, ‘Stick Around’, proved incredibly popular, with plays from the Unambobers, Rob Da Bank, Tom Middleton, the Unambombers, Mungolian Jet Set, Rune LIndbaek, The Idjut Boys and Crazy P. Annie Mac even played it on Radio 1. The release of the boys’ first 12″ single, ‘Bedmo Disco Volume 1′, followed in June 2007.
On the back of the success of their first 12″ of edits, Sell By and Five-Stylez decided to develop their own live “soundsystem” show with old mate Coherent. The Bedmo Disco Soundsystem debuted in July 2007 at Kingpin, Bristol, and has since been seen in London (Vibe Bar, the Big Chill House), Bristol (Detectives Of Perspectives, Freejive, best before:), The Big Chill (Amstel Bar, 2009) and at the Bloom Festival (2007 and 2008). Early in their career the duo also developed an obsession with kazoos and audience participation, and held a record-breaking game of musical statues with 700-plus people at the 2007 Bloom Festival! A second 12″, featuring the duo’s breathless ‘Can’t Get Away’, was released in May 2008, just after the launch of Thumbs Aloft’s bi-weekly residency, ‘Bedmo Disco’, at the Spotted Cow, North St, Bedminster, Bristol – a cool boozer round the corner from their secretive attic base. Thumbs Aloft’s Bedmo Disco residency continues at the Spotted Cow today.
The Thumbs Aloft sound is eclectic and party-minded, with each player bringing something different to the table. A typical Bedmo Disco Soundsystem set could include disco, funk breaks, kwaito funk, disco, dubstep, house, B-more, soul, reggae, rock and hip-hop. Oh, and live vocals from Coherent and extra live percussion from Sell By Dave. The first ever Bedmo Disco Soundsystem mixtape, ‘NORTH ST SOUND’, featuring original material, live favourites and unreleased re-edits, is due to be released very soon. The duo are also busy working on new material, both for Pointless Edits and their proposed Bedmo Disco label.
Saturday 9 January sees Bristol Hi Fi take over the Big Chill Bar, with a set from Massive Attack tour DJ Queen Bee and king of the bootleg Mr.Benn. Bristol Hi-Fi are a crack team of talent responsible for moving the hips and feet of party people here, there and everywhere. Each throwing a different take on their shared love of bass culture into the mix, Bristol Hi-Fi blast out a heavy, heavy sound built on a solid foundation of reggae basslines and hip hop beats. The result is a hip-shaking mix of reggae, afro beats, Latin bass, rare grooves, funk, hearty hip hop and plenty of mash-up treats. One of the highlights of the Big Chill Festival in 2009 – see for yourself in 2010 at The Big Chill Bar.
