BEACH CLEANS IN THE SOUTH WEST
In 1994, 1045 pieces of rubbish were found per km on average on UK beaches that were surveyed. In 2008 it was 2195. In the South West in 2008 it was 4784. 60% of it was small plastic pieces. Since 1994 the density of plastic recorded on beach cleans has increased by 146%.
Plastics contain toxins, carcinogens and are mistaken by sea birds and animals as food. It eventually kills them. World wide it is estimated that there are on average 46,000 pieces of plastic litter for every square mile of ocean.
