In honour of International Women’s Day today we’ve compiled a list of our top ten female artists. We’re sure we’ve probably missed off some of your favourites but here’s a few to get you going.
1 ) PJ Harvey – the Westcountry’s most famous daughter.
2 ) Bat for Lashes – brains, beauty and a voice to die for.
3 ) Laura Marling – Nu-folk pioneer and woman of the moment.
4 ) Beth Orton – underrated singer songwriter whose heartbreaking ballads bring a tear to the eye.
5 ) Thea Gilmore – honey-voiced angsty go-getter with a massive back catalogue.
6 ) Beth Gibbons – Portishead front woman and local hero.
7 ) Dolly Parton – what a woman?! Nuff said.
8 ) Martha Wainwright – destined to live in her brother’s shadow? We think not!
9 ) Jessie J – another lady of the moment but one with attitude and bite, we like.
10 ) Hole – Courtney Love may be one big car crash but Live Through This was truly inspired.
