WELSH COMEDIAN ROB BRYDON HEADS UP CELEB LIST FOR BRISTOL SLAPSTICK FESTIVAL 2011
Rob Bryden, Shappi Khorsandi, Dad’s Army veteran Ian Lavender and Bill Oddie will be among the new faces appearing at the next Slapstick festival of visual comedy, taking place at various Bristol city centre venues from Thursday 27 to Sunday 30 January 2011.
The festival’s biggest event is always the annual Slapstick Gala, which starts at 7.30pm on Friday 28 January at Colston Hall is hosted by Chris Serle and will feature big screen showings of four silent comedy classics with live musical accompaniment from a 25-piece youth jazz band or the European Silent Film Virtuosos, a contribution by Bill Oddie and ex-Monty Python music-maker Neil Innes paying a ukulele tribute to Charlie Chaplin.
Other highlights include Ian Lavender introducing Buster Keaton’s Sherlock Junior, at the Bristol Old Vic (4pm Saturday 29 January); Barry Cryer sharing his top 10 film and TV comedy moments with Rob Bryden later that day and Shappi Khorsandi explaining why she rates Charlie Chaplin and The Great Dictator as essential viewing for any comedian (Bristol Old Vic, Sunday 30, 4pm).
The festival will also premiere a newly-rediscovered Chaplin film; reveal the little known lighter side of the celebrated Danish director Carl Dreyer, unveil a new film by Who Killed Roger Rabbit? animator Richard Williams, and hear Tim Brooke-Taylor remember the comic genius of Marty Feldman.
