WIN TICKETS TO DANCING AT LUGHNASA PLAY AT BRISTOL CANTEEN
This month The Canteen in Stokes Croft, Bristol, is hosting a production of Brian Friel’s play Dancing at Lughnasa and we’ve bagged a pair of tickets to give awa.
Directed by Adam Elms and Ryan Hutching and with a cast of up and coming actors, the play will run from Friday March 25 until Monday March 28. The production is one of the first from Full Theatre Company, a brand new theatre company founded in early 2011 by drama students from UWE. ‘Lughnasa’, by world renowned Irish playwright Brian Friel, was written in 1990, and won a clutch of awards after sell-out runs in Dublin, London, and on Broadway. Critics, scholars, and theatricals consider it a masterpiece, being a haunting, beautiful, lyrical, poignant, and wonderfully funny play. Set in Donegal, Ireland, in the summer of 1936, the Mundy sisters continue their struggle to survive in their crumbling farmhouse on the edge of Ballybeg. They spend the long summer days knitting gloves, feeding hens, teaching at the local school, and most importantly, listening to Marconi – an unreliable but much cherished radio. With the arrival of their sick and confused missionary brother, possibilities of blossoming love, and the threat of a sinister pagan festival wreaking havoc on the community, the outside world suddenly begins to encroach upon the sisters’ safe but claustrophobic existence, meaning their lives will never be the same again. Director Adam Elms said of the play: “A wonderful night out, an experience that stays with you long after the curtain comes down. It’s exciting working at the Canteen too, a developing space for performance in the heart of Stokes Croft, known for it’s alternative scene; music, street art etc. I think we’re the first theatre company to work there, and that is thrilling, to be in a very different and adaptable space.”
