Boutique Retreats is a Cornish company, based out of Wheal Kitty, which offers some fabulous seaside chic and country properties in Cornwall, which you can rent for long weekends, or holidays. We went to Number 4, Mousehole to see what we thought of the property and the service.

Number 4 has a nifty entry system, so you don’t have to meet a housekeeper of worry about what time you arrive – a good start. The cottage is tucked away, up a steep and typically Cornish hill, littered with stone-built cottages and boltholes, complete with little rest benches and an abundance of plants. At the top of the hill lies four cottages, with the best view of the Mousehole quay and out to sea – number 4 is one of these. You can even see St Michaels Mount – the hike is worth the reward.

The interior of Number 4 is the perfect fusion of period features and modern luxury – think a log burner supplied ready with fuel, exposed stonework, beautiful white washed wood with contemporary furniture, under floor heating and cool contemporary art work. Cosy but cool. My favourite room was the bedroom with its comfy double bed, facing the large window, from which you can see nothing but the sea. I visited when Mousehole was magically lit up by the famous Christmas lights, so the amazing view was even more special.

If you are looking somewhere to relax for a while, Number 4 is perfect, as it has everything you need to escape and have some time out – a lovely kitchen (stocked for you with essentials like milk, tea, coffee and biscuits), a TV with DVD player (and a decent section of films). It would also make a good base for a longer stay – with Penzance only a ten-minute drive away.

I was impressed with how ready ‘Number 4’ was – unlike many other ‘self catering’ properties where you have to worry about bring rations with you, this place was ready to go and you even get a complimentary bottle of bubbly to get you off to a good start.

Boutique Retreats were a pleasure to deal with – friendly but professional, with everything as it should be.
